Election Day

As a long time political activist, it is very weird experience to sit this one out. But you really need to be a citizen to vote, so... That's that. However, I do want to take this opportunity to share with my five readers a nice experience I had on election day in Israel a few years ago.
I am pretty sure it was in the 2006 elections, but can't be sure because elections come so often these days... I volunteered to be in charge of a voting site. You have to be an activist to know it, but one is supposed to represent a certain political party to do that. Normally people get paid for sitting in the polling place by the state, but in my party (Meretz, duh!) we donate the money back to the party. So, yes - I volunteered to do it.
Experiencing democracy was such an exciting thing. I know many say that there is a lot of election fraud going on, but I didn't see any of that. I saw people coming to cast their vote. And I saw us guarding their ballots as they are being cast. And after the day was complete we counted the ballots, and reported it to our superiors. And it was beautiful.
It was one of the most boring campaigns Israel ever experienced. In a time of national depression, people felt their opinion doesn't matter. Voting turnout was at an all time low of 63%. It was a pretty quite day. That's the reason I was not out in the streets promoting my party - I also didn't care anymore.
It feels so different today. Elections excite people, and I am sad to have to be across the sea to see an upbeat democratic process.
I won't be in Israel for the coming February elections, for what is expected to be yet another boring race for the house of a (politically) depressed nation. But democracy can not be boring. Elections are where things really change. I urge all my friends to take an active role in both these elections. Whether it is today or in February, go out and vote!

Dr. Horrible for Halloween

This weekend I had the pleasure to attend the charity screening of The Guild & Dr. Horrible organized by Whedonopolis.
In the honorable tradition of a fan-run event, it started almost an hour late. The line was all around the block, and once they let the audience in we still waited quite a bit for the screening to start. Have no doubts - no complains here, it gave me the opportunity to admire the great (and not-so-great) costumes and mingle a bit.
The event started with the wonderful Felicia Day presenting The Guild, following its screening. It's much better without the frequent interruptions for the theme song every two minutes. After a short break, they continued to the Dr. Horrible screening. Before the screening they sold "goody bags" with props for audience participation, and I enjoyed using it very much. My personal favorite was the horse finger puppet, that I loved using during the bad horse songs. Audience participation is always a hard one to manufacture, but I was not the only one to shout random jokes at the screen. Hearing the audience reactions was awesome.
We didn't know it at the time, but the wonderful creators and actors of Dr. Horrible were in the audience watching it with us. Following the screening, they - the three Whedon brothers, Maurissa Tancharoen, Felicia Day & Nathan Fillion - took the stage and said hello. Nathan, with the only good costume, was dressed as Ninja Ropes, an iPhone game which apparently became an internal joke of some sorts in the Dr. Horrible filming. Also spotted in the audience was Alan Tudyk, dressed as a priest.
I really like the Whedonopolis people, so I joined them when they went to grab coffee after the show. I may have gotten myself involved in the production of a live rhps-style screening of Dr. Horrible... Considering how crazy my life is right now, I'm not sure if it would be a smart thing to do. But I probably still going to.

A humbling experience

Grad school. At last, I'm there.
I imagined myself as a graduate students for quite a few years, and I'm finally there.

Got a failing grade on my first assignment. On a technicality. I thought it was unfair, but the professor wanted to make a point (she failed half the class, apparently...). Whatever.

I think it could be good for me.
As many of you may know, my ego regarding my academic abilities has gone sky high with my too-good-to-be-true grades as an undergrad, and I felt it was not healthy. I'm kinda looking forward to having a sane approach to grades, and learning not to get upset with bad ones.

לחץ תמיד מוציא ממני את הטוב ביותר. אפילו בבלוג.
כל הקיץ היה לי את כל הזמן שבעולם, אבל לא מצאתי לנכון לעדכן את הבלוג. והיה מלא דברים לעדכן, אבל פשוט לא הגעתי לזה.
עכשיו התחיל סמסטר חדש ואין לי זמן לנשום. אני יודעת שלא יהיה לי זמן לעדכן, זו ההזדמנות האחרונה. והופ - מצאתי זמן לכתוב (נקווה שזה לא במקום ה"שיעורי בית"...)
אז רק עדכון של הדברים החשובים יותר.

ניו-יורק. היה נחמד. כיף לראות את חברים ומשפחה. מנהטן חמה, מטונפת, לחה ועמוסה. בהחלט יש הרבה מה לעשות שם. מוזיאונים נפלאים. אני חולמת על עוד יום במטרופוליטן. רוב התמונות הושמדו בפירמוט המחשב המפגר (כמה ימים אחרי שחזרנו), אז די התבעסנו מזה... התמונות ששרדו - כאן.

Comic-Con הכנס התיש אותנו לחלוטין (תמונות כאן). פגשנו אנשים מעניינים ולא יצא לנו לבלות מספיק עם עודד ולי שנכחו בשטח.
האירועים שנחרטו בזכרוני (ללא שום סדר הגיוני):
* הסרט החדש של קיאנו ריבס (The Day the Earth Stood Still) נראה מצויין.
* הפאנל של דוקטור הוריבל היה כיפי ומצחיק (מי שלא ראה עדיין - לרוץ. אני מכורה). לא התרשמתי מהטריילר של הסדרה החדשה של ג'וס ובטפשותי גם אמרתי לו את זה בפאנל. איזה כיף לקבל קריאות בוז משלושת אלפים באפיסטים...! ממש לא. הוא שיכנע אותי שיש לזה סיכוי טוב. לא שהיה ספק שאני אנסה את זה לכל הפחות.
* אם עוד לא שמעתם על Repo - The Genetic Opera - לכו לאתר ותתלהבו בעצמכם. החדשות היחידות מהפאנל זה שפריס הילטון עשתה רושם שהיא לא לגמרי נעל.
* JMS נפלא.
* Masquerade זה מגניב. ברק - תודה שסיפרת לי על זה (מזמן, אבל זכרתי...).
* הישראלים עושים את Once More, With Feeling פי אלף יותר טוב.
* הסרט הבא של קווין סמית' נראה ככה-ככה, אבל היה סטנד-אפ מצויין.
* ההפתעה הגדולה מס' 1 - דין קונץ. הגעתי לפאנל שלו לגמרי במקרה (זה היה לפני ג'וס ורציתי לתפוס מקום). הוא היה מצויין. מאד התרשמתי אחרי הכנס לקחתי מהספרייה הציבורית את ה- audiobook של הספר היחיד שלו שהיה להם בפורמט המאד נוח הזה, By the Light of the Moon. מצויין. ספר המד"ב הראשון ש"קראתי" (לשמוע נחשב לקרוא?!) בשנתיים-שלוש האחרונות. עכשיו אני יודעת למה אני לא קוראת מד"ב.
* ההפתעה הגדולה מס' 2 - Twilight, עוד פאנל שנכנסתי אליו במקרה, וזו תופעה פסיכית לחלוטין. בנות צווחניות טסו מכל רחבי ארה"ב רק בשביל הפאנל הזה, ישנו כל הלילה בתור, וחשבתי שעור התוף שלי הולך להיקרע שם. היתה חוויה אנתרופולוגית מעניינת ביותר. והשחקן הראשי נראה שיכור או מסטול (היה 10 בבוקר, למען הסר ספק)

חיים וחוויות קטנות - sea world היה נחמד, צריך לנסוע יותר לסן דייגו, חולה על העיר הזו. ביקרנו גם בסנטה ברברה. מהמם. צריך שוב. ניסיתי ללמוד לרכב על אופניים (כשלון חרוץ אבל לא התייאשתי). כל זה בנוסף לעבודה וצרות חיים שונות שזו לא הבמה הראוייה להן. חוץ מזה, כמה חברים נסעו לחלק ניכר מהקיץ, וזה היה קצת מבאס. אבל זה נתן הזדמנות לחלק האהוב עלי בקיץ הזה - הליכות רומנטיות עם אילן לחוף הים, פעם-פעמיים בשבוע. אני כבר מתגעגעת.

מה הלאה - הלחץ בעבודה מטורף עד החגים, אין לי מושג איך שורדים את זה, אבל כך או אחרת יהיה בסדר. התחלתי ללמוד שוב. עכשיו אני רשמית סטודנטית לתואר שני בתקשורת. באופן לא נוח בעליל, חצי מהמטלות של הסמסטר נופלות על תקופת החגים, יהיה קצת תמרון שם. מאז שהתחיל הסמסטר אני די בהיסטריה, אבל יהיה בסדר (או ככה כולם אומרים לי).

What's so dark about "The Dark Knight"?

A great movie. Wonderful acting by Heath Ledger, and everyone else for that matter. But... dark? Really?

No, this is not a happy movie. You will not find jokes. Not even slight humor or sarcasm.
It depicts the turning of Gotham, a relatively safe city (since Batman's arrival, duh!) into a crime-controlled city once more. The end is not completely optimistic, but it is also not as dark as it could get.

The movie revolves around the Joker's claim that human nature is inherently evil, just like his evil behavior. That under the right circumstances, any one will perform evil acts. So he sort of proves it, with the turn of Harvey Dent.

But in other opportunities, the plot of the movie caves in to popular demand. The people in the boats do the right thing, not killing each other. Batman does the right thing and takes the fault "for the greater good".

In the end of the day, there is hope for Gotham and humanity. So Batman got kinda screwed, does it really make a movie "dark"...?

Yes, the movie is wonderful entertainment, not light nor easy. But that's as far as it goes.

Evil Vista + Stupidity = Trouble

When I got my laptop I asked you all about Vista. I was warned about it, but did not listen.
The computer came with Vista and I was to lazy to install XP. Vista was pretty, and I was seduced. But mostly lazy.
So Vista stayed, only temporarily. But I never got around to removing it.
It gave me some trouble once in a while, I just fixed it and went on.
The last time it died on me I had a really bad morning, and I simply wanted to check my emails.
I tried to repair it, but nothing worked.
And then the computer suggested I restore it to factory settings.
Stupid me, I agreed. And the evil thing formatted my HD and reinstalled Vista.
The computer works fine, but all the data is lost. Some had backups, but the pictures from our trip to New York were all lost. It happened just a couple of days after we got back, so there was no backup yet. Simply lost.

It was a month ago. It took me this long to be able to write about it. It really hurts, 'cause it's my very own stupidity that brought me here.
I succeeded recovering some of the pictures and the data, not a lot of it. I'll upload it sometime this weekend and share with my 3 loyal readers.

I thought it's a really cool game, until my weekend was ruined by bad "artists".

On one side of our apartment, close to the leaving room, there's a guy singing all day Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive". On the other side, next to the bedroom, a group of young guys are obsessing about "Creep". I used to love this song. But no more. It's REALLY loud, the "singer" has a horrible voice, and those fake drums are annoying as hell. They are singing all day and all night.
Saturday they were singing for 3-4 hours in the afternoon. Sunday too. Couldn't sleep, couldn't study...

Save me!!!

While at it, a few thoughts & updates not worth a post of their own:
1. My first midterm is coming up this Wednesday.
2. Apparently, the great Sigur Ros have a full feature film, called Heima. It's on Youtube...
3. Books on CD are a great invention. More to come later.
4. American poor people are REALLY poor. I live in a bubble. Maybe I'll write about that too sometime.

Friday night we went for a Shabbat dinner at the Rabbi's house. Not sure if I ever mentioned it here, but we are regulars at the local Chabad these days (ye, even me!), I love going and love the family running it.
So Sima (she happens to be the Rabbi's daughter, but not in the stereotypical way - she's really cool) told me about her visit to Hebron when she was in Israel. She called the Chabad Rabbi in Hebron, and he gave her the number of a Baruch Marzel, who set her up with a place to stay, etc. She had no clue who that person was. She reports he seemed like an okay person, she realized he was an activist, but didn't know how famous he is until I told her. I tried to explain to her that he's probably the craziest person living today in Israel.

Which reminds me - next time I'm in Israel (which isn't planned for a long long time), I'm going to Me'arat HaMachpela. It's been a dream of mine since the first time I read about that place in elementary school. Who joins me?

The end of free time

Finally started that undergrad class I'm taking before I can start my M.A.
Started on the wrong foot, when I missed the first meeting, but yesterday was the second one and I officially started studying again.
Class was okay, not very interesting nor boring.
But I love it. 'cause I love school.

I'm not sure if it's the excitement of going back to school, or if it's gonna stay like that - but my life was transformed and are now geared only towards studying - reading the articles, doing the assignments the best I can, etc. That transformation is quite amazing. And frightening. 'cause it means that all that free time I had by now is gone. Instead of slacking around in front of the TV, going to museums, sci-fi cons, going out all night , I'll be reading and doing homework.
And I'll probably be very happy about it.

So I love bluegrass music...?

Heard a very nice band last night, Hot Buttered Rum, and it was really great.
Got there, sort of, by accident, but it was really awesome.
And learned in the process of bluegrass music, which is a very new concept for me.
And it's surprisingly good! (at least, that particular band is).

A question to the computer experts

So... I'm about to buy a laptop. Chose what I want, only it comes with Windows Vista.
Two questions:
1. How bad is Vista, really? Anyone had first-hand experience?
2. Does it really matter what the computer comes with? Can't I just format the HD when I get the computer and load winXP?
I'd do that without a second thought, but someone told me that it's not so recommended on laptops, 'cause I might have issues with the drivers. Any thoughts? Is it true, or BS?

הק, כלבי האהוב שנשאר בארץ, מזדקן.
הוא כלב די משוגע מלכתחילה. הוא אוהב את החופש שלו, ומעולם לא הסתפק בטיולים עם רצועה. כשהיה גור, ועוד קיוויתי לחנך אותו, ללא קשר לכמות הטיולים היומיים, הוא היה מוצא כל הזמן דרכים יצירתיות לברוח מהבית ולשוטט ברחובות בעצמו. במשך השנים הוא חינך אותנו שאין טעם להוציא אותו לטיולים, ושהוא יטייל בעצמו וידאג לעצמו. וכשגרנו בשכונת יוקרה מבודדת זה היה די בסדר. הוא כלב מאד חכם, ובמידה מסויימת מאמצי (הלא רבים במיוחד למען האמת) לאלף אותו הצליחו - הוא מבין את הפקודות הבסיסיות כמו "בוא" ו"שב". אבל... הוא בוחר אם לציית או לא, לפי המצב רוח שלו. וכשהוא רוצה משהו - הוא מסוגל לנבוח שעות ללא הפסקה עד שיקבל את זה. בדרך כלל הוא פשוט רוצה שהדלת של הבית תהיה פתוחה והוא יוכל לבוא ולצאת כאוות נפשו. מאחר שזה לא בדיוק נוח לדיירי הבית האחרים, החיים איתו כל השנים היו מאבק די רציני.

הוא כלב מעורב, כבר בן 15, אבל אנרגטי כמו גור. הוא תמיד היה בבית של הורים שלי, גם כשגרתי במוצקין. אבל טיפלתי בו מרחוק. כשנסעתי ללוס אנג'לס, בלית ברירה, השארתי אותו אצל אמא שלי, שלא מוכנה לקחת אחריות של ממש עליו - רק קצת, כל עוד זה לא מפריע לה. והוא כלב משוגע - הוא תמיד מפריע.
לעת זקנה הוא מתחיל להיות חולה פה ושם, וגם משוגע יותר מהרגיל. בקיץ האחרון אמא שלי דיווחה שהדוור פחד להביא דואר כי הק היה בחוץ כל הזמן והפחיד אותו. הוא שוטט ברחובות שעות ולא רצה לחזור הביתה.

והשבוע הוא חלה. הוא עשה מלא צרות לאמא שלי (כולל לעשות את צרכיו בבית), ורק כשאח שלי בא הביתה לסופ"ש הוא לקח אותו לוטרינר (אחרי שהבטחתי לשלם - לאף אחד אין בבית כסף לשלם על זה...). מתברר שבכל הטיולים שלו לבד בחוץ, הוא אכל כמויות של אדמה שסתמו לו את הקיבה וגרמו לו לעצירות. אחרי חוקן, אינפוזיה ללילה ו- 1500 ש"ח, הוא חזר הביתה. אני לא בטוחה שאמא שלי תדאג לתת לו את התרופות, ואין שום סיבה בעולם שזה לא יקרה שוב, כי הוא יוצא לבד ואף אחד לא משגיע עליו.

ואין פתרון. הוא צריך מישהו שיטפל בו לעת זקנה, ואף אחד לא מוכן/מסוגל.
נשארתי רק אני. אז אני שוקלת לעבור דירה למקום שבו אפשר להחזיק חיות מחמד באפריל, אז החוזה הנוכחי שלנו נגמר. לא יודעת אם טיסה טרנס-אטלנטית לא תסכן את בריאותו. זה בטוח יסכן את בריאותי, כי אסור לכלבים לשוטט כאן ברחובות. הוא ינבח עד שהוא ישגע אותי. וממש ממש לא בא לי לעבור דירה, אני מאד אוהבת את הדירה שלנו. אבל הק צריך אותי, אולי אין לי ברירה.

Just heard that The 4400, one of my all-time favorite TV shows got canceled.
I was REALLY looking forward for the next season. It could have been amazing.

On a side note - a quick update: Tamar-Hagai-Matan are (almost) back in Israel. We have the apartment for ourselves again, so maybe I'll finally have time to write about the Bjork concert. But I miss them already, it was fun having family, and the house seems so empty without them around.

היה חנוכה. היה נפלא.
זה החג עם השירים הכי כיפיים. ושרתי את כ-ו-ל-ם. כל ערב (מישהו רוצה עותק משירון חנוכה שלי?)
ויום שלישי היה מסיבת חנוכה לתלמידים שלי. היה חווייתי ביותר. ומתיש. התלמידים לימדו אותי שירי חנוכה אמריקניים, ואני ניסיתי ללמד אותם שירים בעברית (ללא הצלחה, אני חייבת לציין). הם כל כך חמודים! וקיבלתי כל מיני מתנות מהתלמידים, זה גם היה כיף. חלק נתנו לי מתנות "אמיתיות" (כלומר - ההורים שלהם...), וחלק נתנו לי ציורים.
כל תרבות מתנות-חנוכה מתחילה להתברר לי, אבל זה עדיין מוזר. אבל גם נחמד.

ויום שלישי בבוקר נחתו כאן תמר (אחות של אילן), חגי והתינוק שלהם מתן. הם נשארים אצלנו עד שבוע הבא. קצת דאגנו שיהיה צפוף, אבל ממש לא. אילן ואני אוהבים אורחים, ונורא כיף קצת משפחה. מתן חטף איזה וירוס שעתיים אחרי הנחיתה, אבל ברוך השם עכשיו הוא בסדר. מאד כיף לנו איתם, ואתמול הלכנו איתם לבאולינג. תמונות בקרוב. עשיתי את ה"סטרייק" הראשון בחיי. חוץ מזה, כולנו היינו די גרועים. והיה נפלא.
אבל יום רביעי אני התקררתי, חום ונזלת ופיכסה, אז לא ממש נותנים לי להתקרב לתינוק... אוף, הוא כל כך חמוד! אז אני עובדת קצת מהבית, וקצת הולכת לעבודה. שונאת להיות חולה.

אבל השיא בהחלט היה ההופעה של ביורק. זה היה ביום רביעי, בשיא ההתקררות המעצבנת שלי, אז הלכתי עם חום. זה בהחלט פגם בחוייה, אבל שום מחלה לא תפריד ביני ובין ביורק (במיוחד לא אחרי ששילמתי 200$ לכרטיס!!!). אני אכתוב בימים הקרובים יותר על ההופעה, קצת קשה לי להתרכז עם המחלה. כשקצת יורד לי הכאב ראש אז יש יותר מדי רעש בבית (בכל זאת אנחנו 4 אנשים ותינוק בדירת שני חדרים...). אבל ההופעה היתה גדולה מהחיים ושווה כל אגורה, ללא ספק.

The Bjork Concert

On the night before the concert, I had a dream about it. In my dream, I had the opportunity to ask Bjork which of her albums is her favorite. I can't recall which one she named, but it was one of the newer ones. I was so disappointed - I really hoped it would be my favorites - Post or Homogenic.
This dream reflects my feelings about her more recent music - definitely genius, but simply not as fun. In the real concert, obviously, I couldn't talk to Bjork directly, but it did give me some insight to the way she feels about her own music. and I believe she still loves her older materials, and it's very comforting for me. That, and the fact that her latest album - Volta - is much better then his predecessors...

One of the most amazing experiences of the concert was being surrounded by Bjork fans. My love to her music has been a very personal experience for me over the years. Since I was a friend of Ron, who introduced me to her music when we were in High School, I hadn't has someone who shared my love and admiration to Bjork and her music. Nor I looked for someone to share it with - My experiences when I listen to her are my own.
And there I was, surrounded by thousands of fans. The Nokia theatre was full. The concert was sold out. That's over 7,000 people!!! It was a... strange... felling, seeing all those faces, and each of them listens and loves the same music. But, most likely, in a very different way then my own private experience.

The stage was decorated with colorful banners, with pictures of what seemed like fish, and lookd like the setting of some pagan ritual. Then, a band of 10 brass instruments (flutes, horns, trumpets, etc.) came into the stage, standing in semi-circle. For the first song Bjork stood in the middle, dressed in a golden-silver dress with some fluffy-winged things on it, wearing a crown-like hairband on her forehead - she looked like the queen of the tribe.

The concert, obviously, was spectacular. Bjork is amazing. Larger then life. Lots of nice effects that add to the excitement - lasers, flame burns on the side of the stage, and more. She knows how to put a great show. The audience was on their feet the entire time, which was kinda hard for me, as I was pretty sick and really needed to sit down once in a while...

She performed most of my favorite songs, including Hunter, Yoga, Earth Intruders, Hidden Place and Unison. The adaptation of Oceania, Originally an a cappella song (you might remember it from the performance at the opening Olympic ceremony in 2004), performed with the brass section, was very special. On another favorite song, Declare independence, the DJ used an interesting instrument, the Reactable, that can be seen here. My brother later told me it is going to revolutionize music. I'm not a prophet, and personally - I don't understand what's so special about it. But it was cool, and it sounds great.
It was very exciting for me when she performed Unravel, the song I chose on the very last minute (on the wedding day itself - it's a nice story for some other time) to be the slow dance at our wedding.

The weirdest experience, though, was when she sang Hyperballad. I have been rather obsessive about this song for many years, but never realized how popular it is. In fact, she let the audience participate and sing it with her. And I was truly surprised to see that everyone know the lyrics. Yet, it was an extraordinary performance of this beautiful, never-ending song.

Also worth commenting on is the opening show, a band called Ratatat was pretty good. Great music, and it seemed like the musicians really had fun playing. I would actually like to hear them sometime again.

That night was a truly amazing experience, I enjoyed every dime, and I hope to do it again. Next time - front row...!

Among the many different project I've been doing at work, I had the opportunity to be the editor of our first newsletter in a long, long time. I am extra proud, 'cause I also designed it (with the help of MS publisher, what a wonderful tool), was in charge of contact with advertisers, and had quite a bit of influence on content.
